Lincoln meant that lies are always exposed in the end. But behind his words lies a question that hurts much more: is there anyone we can rely on all the way?

If we are honest, when we ourselves fail to keep a promise, it is usually not malicious deception. We are simply limited. We overestimated our strength. The money ran out. Circumstances turned out differently. Someone got sick, someone moved away, we changed our minds. We meant it sincerely — and still could not deliver. That is exactly why trusting people is frightening: even the kindest of them are not in control of their own lives.

The Bible says something remarkable about God. He is reliable not in one way, but in every way at once. He does not lie— it is not in His nature. He does not change His mind — His character and His purposes do not shift over time. His circumstances never change — nothing catches Him by surprise. And He has the power to do everything He has said.

"God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?"
— Numbers 23:19

Our promises depend on what tomorrow brings. God's promises do not, because tomorrow belongs to Him.

THE GOOD NEWS:
If God does not lie, does not change His mind, and is able to keep His word, then His promise to you is not empty either. And He has promised forgiveness to everyone who comes to Him; He has promised never to abandon you; He has promised eternal life through Jesus Christ. "In the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised long ages ago" (Titus 1:2).

People may have let you down — often not out of malice, but simply because they are human. But the One who promises you a new life has never broken His word, and He will never be powerless to keep it.

Test it yourself. Say to Him simply: "Lord, I am tired of being disappointed. But if You keep Your word — show me." He answers prayers like this.
