Why does something always feel missing?
“Why does something always feel missing?”
“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”
— C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Sound familiar? We wait for a vacation, a promotion, a move, a new relationship, and think, “Then I’ll be happy.” The dream comes true, and joy comes, but it doesn’t last. Soon that quiet voice returns: “This isn’t it. There must be something more.” We try to fill the emptiness with shopping, work, relationships and entertainment, yet it never quite goes away. Lewis saw this unquenchable longing not as a defect, but as a clue: it points to where we truly come from.
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart…”
(Ecclesiastes 3:11, ESV)
That is why nothing on earth can fully satisfy us. God has placed eternity in our hearts, and a heart made for the eternal will never rest in what is temporary. This isn’t a punishment; it’s an invitation. Our longing for “something more” is really a longing for God Himself. The good things of this world are gifts, but they can never replace the Giver.
GOOD NEWS:
The One our hearts long for is searching for us. In Jesus Christ, God came to us, and through His death and resurrection He tore down the wall of sin that separates us from Him. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35, ESV). In Him the emptiness is finally filled, and a life begins that will never end.
